June Carter Cash first appeared on screen in 1957 as ‘Clarise’ in Western series ‘Gunsmoke,’ and as ‘Rachel’ in series ‘The Adventures of Jim Bowie.’
Next, Carter was seen as ‘Marietta’ in ‘Country Music Holiday’ (1958). She featured in ‘Gospel Road: A Story of Jesus’ (1973) as ‘Mary Magdalene,’ and was seen in series ‘NET Playhouse’ (1970), and ‘Little House on the Prairie’ (1976). She appeared in comedy sketches on husband Johnny Cash’s shows and Christmas Specials. She was part of series ‘Johnny Cash & Friends’ (1976).
Carter played ‘Crystal’ in TV-movie ‘Thaddeus Rose & Eddie’ (1978). She received appreciation for her portrayal of ‘Mayhayley Lancaster’ in TV-movie ‘Murder in Coweta County’ (1983). She followed this with role as ‘Dee Dee Stanley’ in TV-movie ‘The Baron & the Kid’ (1984).
Carter played ‘Momma James’ in TV-movie ‘The Last Days of Frank & Jesse James’ (1986), and ‘Sister Ruth’ in Western-drama series ‘Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman’ (1993-1997). In drama-film ‘The Apostle’ (1997) she essayed ‘Mrs. Momma Dewey.’
The Apostle is a drama film which tells the story of a charismatic preacher whose wife begins a relationship with another man. She also starts conspiring against him to remove him from his power. He soon leaves his town and ends up in Louisiana. He changes his identity and starts preaching on the radio.
While touring Israel, Johnny Cash narrates the story of the life of Jesus Christ, and his death and his resurrection.
