Hiroyuki Sanada started his training with martial arts star and actor Sonny Chiba’s ‘Japan Action Club’ at the age of eleven. He made his acting debut as ‘Endo Kenichi’ in the 1966 crime action film ‘Game of Chance.’ That same year, he also made his television debut by appearing in the television series ‘Freezing Point.’ Sanada returned to play ‘Endo Kenichi’ in ‘Game of Chance 2’ (1967) and ‘Game of Chance 3: Lullaby for My Son’ (1967).
Sanada was next seen in films like ‘Abashiri Prison: Drifter at the Edge of the World’ (1969), ‘Legacy of Honor’ (1970), ‘Brutal Tales of Chivalry 7’ (1970), and ‘The Executioner’ (1974). The year 1978 saw the release of the historical martial arts period film ‘Shogun's Samurai’ in which Sanada starred as ‘Hayate.’ The film was well-received by critics and received five ‘Japan Academy Prize’ nominations. The following year, he played the role of a famous Japanese daimyō of the Sengoku period, ‘Takeda Katsuyori’ in the science-fiction action film ‘G.I. Samurai.’ The film inspired a television miniseries titled ‘Sengoku Jieitai: Sekigahara no Tatakai‘ in 2006.
Hiroyuki Sanada continued to appear in films like ‘Samurai Reincarnation’ (1981), ‘Ninja Wars’ (1982), ‘Mahjong hōrōki’ (1984), and ‘We Are Not Alone’ (1993). In 1998, he starred in the Hideo Nakata-directed horror film ‘Ring.’ The film earned critical acclaim and was a massive box office success. In 1999, Sanada was seen in ‘Ring 2,’ the direct sequel of ‘Ring.’ The movie was the second highest-grossing Japanese film of 1999. He made his first major appearance in Hollywood in the 2003 epic period action drama film ‘The Last Samurai.’ The film was nominated for 4 ‘Academy Awards’ and was a box office hit.
After ‘The Last Samurai,’ Sanada appeared in many Hollywood blockbusters, such as ‘Rush Hour 3’ (2007), ‘Speed Racer’ (2008), ‘The Wolverine’ (2013), ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019), and ‘Mortal Kombat’ (2021). He will be next seen in the upcoming neo-noir action thriller film ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’
