Maureen and Charles met for the first time at a City Avenue restaurant. Back then, Maureen was working as a part-time model in Bucks County. Their first meeting was quite awkward. They were not confident enough to talk to each other due to their racial differences. A DNA test conducted later and presented on the TV show 'Lopez Tonight' revealed that Charles had mixed ethnicity, consisting of 14% Native American, 11% European, and 75% African origins. Nonetheless, the two eventually got to know each other and fell in love.

Unfortunately, their relationship faced a lot of criticism. Their marriage created a public controversy in the late 1980s. Even Charles’s father once expressed his apprehension about his son’s relationship. However, he supported Charles’s decision completely. Due to all the criticism they faced because of their racial differences, Maureen and Charles decided to have a court marriage without any involvement of the media. They got married in 1989, in front of a judge. They even hid their marriage from the press for a long time. Their daughter, Christiana, was born in the same year. Some rumors suggest that Maureen and Charles have a son, too.

Charles has always acknowledged Maureen’s role in bringing positive changes in his life. He admits that he did not believe in the institution of marriage earlier, but now that he is married to Maureen for over 3 decades, he feels grateful to God.
