Jay Hernandez is an American actor and model. He made a chance entry into the entertainment industry, owing to his good looks. Hernandez was spotted by a talent manager who suggested that he should try to make a career in acting. Hernandez made his debut in the TV series ‘Hang Time.’ Following this, he was offered film roles. Hernandez played the lead character in the teen romantic movie ‘Crazy/Beautiful.’ Hernandez received the ‘ALMA Awards’ nomination for his performance in this movie. He appeared in TV series such as ‘Undressed,’ ‘One World,’ and ‘American Family.’ He appeared as a baseball player in ‘The Rookie’ and played the lead role in the horror movie ‘Hostel.’ The latter became successful at the box office, and his performance was widely applauded. He received several award nominations for this film. Later, he starred in a sequel to the movie, too. Hernandez played the protagonist in the movie ‘Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power.’ In the movie, he portrayed ‘Carlito Brigante,’ a drug lord.

Jay Hernandez was born Javier Manuel Hernandez Jr. on February 20, 1978, in Montebello, California. His family has Mexican ancestry. His father, Javier Hernandez Sr., is a mechanic, and his mother, Isis Maldonado, is a secretary and accountant. He has a younger sister, Amelia, and two older brothers, Michael and Gabriel.
Hernandez attended the ‘Don Bosco Technical Institute,’ in Rosemead, for his early studies. In his senior year, he was transferred to the ‘Schurr High School,’ in Montebello.

Career
Jay Hernandez was spotted by talent manager Howard Tyner in an elevator. He was impressed by Hernandez’s good looks, and suggested him to try his luck in movies. He got Hernandez enrolled at an acting school, and sent his pictures to casting agents.
In 1998, Hernandez made his acting debut in the TV series ‘Hang Time.’ It was a teen sitcom aired on the ‘NBC’ network. In the series, Hernandez starred as a recurring character ‘Antonio Lopez.’ In 1999, he appeared in an episode of the series ‘USA High.’ In 2000, Hernandez appeared in the series ‘Undressed.’
Hernandez appeared in ‘Living the Life’ in 2000. He was cast as ‘Carlos Nunez’ in the teen romantic drama ‘Crazy/Beautiful.’ His character, ‘Carlos,’ was a studious boy, who well in love with a girl having self-destructive tendencies. Kirsten Dunst was Hernandez’s co-star in the movie. The movie was a success. For his excellent performance, Hernandez was nominated for the ‘ALMA Award for the Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.’
In 2002, Hernandez was cast in ‘The Rookie.’ In this movie, Hernandez portrayed a baseball player ‘Joaquin “Wack” Campos.’ In the same year, he appeared in two episodes of the series ‘American Family’ as ‘Cisco Gonzalez.’ He was replaced by A J Lamas.
