James David Maslow was born on 16th July, 1990 in New York City and was brought up in La Jolla, California. Maslow’s father, Mike Maslow, is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent and his mother, Cathy Burge, belongs to Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), Swiss-German, Irish, German and English ancestry. Although his mother is a Catholic but he was raised Jewish.

At the age of 13 years he became bar mitzvah. He has stated that he is a spiritual and religious person and loves to spend his free time with family and friends.

James has an older brother, Philip Maslow, now a doctor, and a half–sister, Ali Thom, and she is a lifestyle, design and beauty blogger.

James’ parents settled down in La Jolla when he was just six years of age. During his childhood he used to attend Hebrew school six days a week.

He started to sing in the San Diego Children’s choir at the age of 6. He has said that some of his favourite memories are that of singing at the San Diego Padres game with the Children’s Choir and also performing with the San Diego Opera.

He studied in Torrey Pines and La Jolla elementary schools, Muirlands Middle School and when he was eight years old, he attended San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts to fulfil his dreams of becoming an entertainer.

At the age of 10, he performed a small role in ‘La boheme’ by San Diego Opera productions and also took part in acting camps held at the La Jolla Playhouse.

James got his first agent when he was fourteen years old, and while in high school he portrayed ‘Danny Zuko’ in Grease live and Marius in ‘Les Miserables’.

Later when he was midway through his 10th Grade, he decided to shift from the School of Creative and Performing Arts and joined the Coronado School of the Arts and in 2007 he graduated from CoSA in musical-theatre department.

James started his acting career in 2008 where he played the role of Shane in a television series named ‘iCarly’. This was followed by many TV appearances. He enacted the role of Maury McQuarrie in YouTube miniseries ‘Be Right Back’ and as Bart Foxworth in Television movie titled ‘Seeds of Yesterday’ (2015).

Maslow is most known for his performances in the ‘Big Time Rush’ (2009-2013) television series in the main role and for his dancing performance in ‘Dancing with the Stars’ (2014). He was praised for his performance in ‘Big Time Movie’ (2012) as well.

James is famous as the lead vocalist of the boy band ‘BTR’ who released their first debut albumtitled ‘Big Time Rush’ on 11th October, 2010 after their success in the Nickelodeon TV series by the same name telecast in 2009.

This album included original songs like ‘Any Kind of Guy’ and ‘City Is Ours’ and they ranked in the US Billboards Hot Top 100 singles and received Gold certifications from the RIAA on March 2011 and Platinum certifications for record sales of more than 1million copies.

The ‘BTR’ album in its first week of release sold 67 thousand copies and got third position on the Billboard 200 album chart. Their first album got worldwide recognition. James’ BTR album also topped the US Kid’s Album and Top Soundtracks charts.

James and his band released their first EP titled ‘Best of Season 1’ on 19th November 2010 in countries like Australia, UK, Germany and Switzerland only as a digital release.

The band then released their second album titled ‘Elevate’ on 21st November 2011 and the first single titled ‘Music Sounds Better With U’ featuring hip-hop artist Mann was released on 1st November 2011 and it reached the 1st position on US Kids Digital Songs Chart 2012 .

Maslow wrote the song ‘Elevate’ and co-wrote songs like ‘Love Me Love Me’, ‘Superstar’ and ‘Music Sounds Better with U’. He even helped write the UK iTunes bonus track titled ‘Epic’ and the 2012 re-release bonus track ‘Windows Down’. Their second album ‘Elevate’ sold over 70 thousand copies in the first week.

They next released their second EP titled ‘Big Time Movie Soundtrack’ on March 6th, 2012. It consisted of six cover songs from Beatles and also included the soundtrack of the comedy based television film titled ‘Big Time Movie’. This EP has sold over 300 thousand copies as of 2013.

The band released their third album titled ‘24/ Seven’ on 11th June, 2013 and in this album they experimented with R&B and dance-rock sounds. The album’s self-titled single was released on 19th June 2013 and it achieved number fourth position on the US Billboard 200 and got first position on Billboards Kid Albums chart for consecutive five weeks and also became the ‘Hot Shot Debut’ of the week.

Their 3rd album sold over 110 thousand copies as of 2013 and it was a worldwide success mainly in countries like Greece, Mexico, Columbia and Venezuela.

James Maslow is also a popular YouTube star. He has gained a huge fan following in his YouTube account where he uploads covers of songs like ‘Clarity’ by Zedd, ‘Love Somebody’ by Maroon5 and ‘Thinking Out Loud’ by Ed Sheraan.

James Maslow published his single ‘Circles’ and his debut album song ‘Lies’ on 2016. He uploaded the title song ‘How I Like It’ from his debut album on YouTube on 27th February 2017. He has 2.2 million followers on his Instagram account.
